It's TIME. . . use 'em or lose 'em

In the last agAdvance, our clients were informed of a material change to the Alberta Offset System (AOS). This is so important that we felt it should be repeated as follows:

"The bottom line, ladies and gentlemen, is that after January 1, 2012, growers may not be eligible to claim any retroactive credits. This creates a "use them or lose them" situation for our customers right now for past credits dating back to 2002 while maintaining the opportunity to claim Offsets annually going forward. Obviously, we strongly urge all producers who qualify for offset generation in past years under this protocol to contact us immediately to take advantage of the retroactive opportunity. Please call ATAI at (403) 255-5548 or e-mail us
at to make arrangements for your farm immediately."

The Alberta Government has also signaled that their intention is to raise the level of data verification for all protocols under the AOS from “Notice to Reader” to “Reasonable Level” of Assurance for 2012 and beyond. The Saskatchewan Government has also signaled that it may require this level of data quality upon the launch of its system very shortly. The result of this elevated requirement of diligence into the accuracy and completeness of the data that all participants in the AOS and Sask. Systems will require may result in several very important conclusions:

  • The Large Final Emitters who are the customers for your Offsets will have a significantly higher level of confidence in your tonnes which should result in a higher price.
  • The Alberta / Saskatchewan Governments will have more confidence in all Offsets which may grow the overall opportunity for all stakeholders.
  • The entire Offset system will have more credibility with stakeholders both within Alberta and Sask. as well as other jurisdictions.
  • Other protocol opportunities may develop for utilization within the Agricultural sector much sooner.

This new level of Assurance will also result in increased costs of Verification and Data Management for Agri- Trend Aggregation (ATAI). However, ATAI has been working “shoulder to shoulder” with Agri-Data Solution to enhance our internal systems to accommodate your future Offset requirements and we are prepared.

ATAI has established a reputation as a partner with our producer partners as being reliable, transparent and competent with reduced risk on your Tillage Offsets. We feel strongly that this reputation will allow us to maximize value to our clients well into the future.
